History

SERIC is a strategic partnership committed to enhancing the capacity of its partners and the region by fostering collaboration, information development and sharing in a climate of trust and accountability.

Initially conceived in early 2000 with the objective of providing spatial information services and building the capacity of contributing partners to realise opportunities and benefits for natural resource management and economic development of the South East Region of South Australia.

Based on the Herbert Resource Information Centre in Queensland, SERIC was initiated as the first such centre in South Australia and the model was seen as a pilot for the establishment of other resource information centres in South Australia.

Established in November 2001 with the appointment of an Executive Manager, SERIC became fully operational with the appointment of a GIS Officer in June 2002, and was officially launched by the Honourable John Hill, Minister for Environment and Conservation, in April 2003.

SERIC’s success in achieving its initial goals was measured by an Independent Review in September 2003 after its first year of operation. In 2004 it registered as an Incorporated Association and established its own constitution.

Throughout 2005 SERIC has expanded its area of operation into South West Victoria and its significant success as a pilot has led to the establishment of a second South Australian Resource Information Centre in the Murray-Darling Basin region.

In mid 2006 SERIC won a Spatial Excellence Award presented by the Australian Spatial Industry Association. Achieving such a prestigious award demonstrates the level of excellence that SERIC contributes to the region, and that SERIC is amongst the forefront of the industry in terms of the quality and innovation of the solutions it provides to its partners.
