Rural Addressing in the South East
For a number of years, state governments across Australia have been working toward the implementation of a nation wide agreed standard of rural addressing. When one travels in the country it is easy to see why such an initiative is long overdue. Apart from the fact that some roads have no names or that some council roads have the same name but are in different locations, once on the right road, you still have to locate your destination.
The advantages of a clear and consistent addressing system across all rural areas will be of tremendous assistanec to emergency services vehicles, contractors, transport companies and the travelling public in general.
Rural Addressing in South Australia is a project being managed by the Department of Transport, Energy and Infrastructure (DTEI). As an element of our partnership with DWLBC, who, as an agency are contributing to the Rural Addressing project, SERIC has undertaken a significant role in the implementation of the program in the South East. SERIC will support the six rural councils, Tatiara, Naracoorte Lucindale, Wattle Range, Kingston, Robe and Grant to identify road "issues"within their council boundaries. These "issues "may range from roads that need to be named, duplication of names within close proximity, cross council boundary roads with different names at each end and the like. SERIC will utilise GIS software and recent 2008 imagery to identify properties requiring an address and then apply the address to a data base which will be forwarded to councils for review. Once Councils and DTEI have completed their Quality Assurance processes, landowners will be formally notified of their new road address.
How will addresses be applied?
-
Each rural road will be given a name and a designated starting point.
-
The address number will be based on how many metres the property entrance is from the start of the road, divided by 10.
-
If the entrance is 5080 metres from the start of Caroline Road then the address will be 508 Caroline Road.
-
The numbers are rounded up or down so that all properties on the left side of the road (driving away from the nominated starting point) are odd numbers and properties on the right are even numbers.
-
So if 508 Caroline Road was on the left hand side it would be rounded up to 509.
-
All properties will be signposted, however when driving it will be possible to simply use the odometer to find out how much further you need to go.
